we are pleased to announce the 2nd International Summer School for Neuropathology and Epilepsy Surgery (INES), which will be held from August 30th to September 3rd 2014 in Erlangen. Epilepsy surgery becomes increasingly available as treatment option for patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsies, and has been proven very successful for patients suffering from specific epilepsy-associated brain lesions, such as hippocampal sclerosis, brain tumors or Focal Cortical Dysplasias. The microscopic diagnosis of epilepsy surgery brain specimens remains, however, challenging, often due to the broad histopathological spectrum of disease variants. With this summer school, the Commission on European Affairs of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE-CEA) will continue their efforts to make available an advanced teaching
course aimed at neuro-/pathologists engaged in the diagnostic evaluation of epilepsy surgery tissue. Our summer school is restricted to 36 attendees who will be trained in small groups at the microscope in advanced neuropathological
diagnosis by expert tutors. In addition, there will be morning lectures addressing broader topics in order to gain a better understanding of a
clinician’s perspective and in particular the role of detailed neuropathological diagnosis in the epilepsies for directing clinical decision-making.
We are particularly keen to encourage participants from low- or middle-income countries to attend this summer school. Travel bursaries, provided by the International Society of Neuropathology and German Society of Epileptology, will be available for such participants. Decision-making for travel grants from other foundations is still pending and will be communicated as soon as possible.
We are very much looking forward to welcoming you to Erlangen and Medical Valley – our national leading edge cluster in the European Metropolitan
Region of Nuremberg!
